Free camping Australia

2-3 person berth campervan

One of the big incentives for people to hire a campervan or a motorhome is to take advantage of free camping sites around Australia so they can save money on their accommodation.

There are free campsites and grounds around the country. But if you are travelling in a campervan or motorhome, it’s likely that you will be required to stay at a paid campsite.

This depends on where you stay. Different councils around the country provide different free camping rules. Some have designated camping or rest spots where you can pull-up and rest for 24-48h before you have to move on.

There are others where you can pull-up and setup. These places usually don’t have power or access to showers or hot water.

How can you easily find free camping locations?

You can invest in the WikiCamps Australia app, which costs a few dollars ($5-7), but will allow you to find and plan your trip so that you will save money that you would have spent on staying at a campsite. (Campsites can cost anywhere from $5-35 on average per night).
