Sydney’s depots are in three clusters. None of them is at the airport or in the CBD, and none offers an airport shuttle, so allow for a taxi or rideshare. Most depots close mid-afternoon, and some close on Sundays. If your flight lands late, plan a night in a hotel and pick up the next morning.

Cheap campervan hire in Sydney

  • Travel from May to August. Winter rates are often less than half the summer price, and NSW’s north coast stays mild.
  • Avoid school holidays. The late December to January period is the most expensive and books out first.
  • Look at relocations. Sydney is one of the busiest relocation hubs, with vans regularly moving to Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns for as little as $1 a day. See campervan relocation deals.
  • Hire for longer. Daily rates often drop for hires of 14 days or more.
  • Choose a smaller van. A 2-berth budget van is fine if you’re staying in holiday parks with showers.

Luxury and Winnebago motorhome hire in Sydney

For couples who want more comfort, or for families, compare 4- and 6-berth motorhomes with a shower, toilet and full kitchen. These include Winnebago-style and European models. Luxury vans are often over 3 metres high, which matters for tolls, parking and some car parks. See our luxury motorhome hire guide for what’s included.

What size campervan or motorhome should you hire?

One-way campervan hire from Sydney

Sydney is the starting point for Australia’s most popular one-way campervan routes. Most national brands allow one-way hire between their depots for a fee, which is sometimes waived when they need vans moved.

  • Sydney to Brisbane: about 920 km on the Pacific Motorway. Take 7–10 days via Port Stephens, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay. See Brisbane campervan hire.
  • Sydney to Melbourne: about 880 km inland on the Hume, or about 1,040 km on the coast via the Princes Highway, Jervis Bay and Eden. See Melbourne campervan hire.

Tolls, parking and driving a campervan in Sydney

  • Tolls: Sydney has more toll roads than any other Australian city, including the Harbour Bridge and Tunnel, M2, M4, M5, M7, M8, Lane Cove Tunnel and NorthConnex. They are all cashless, and your supplier bills you afterwards. Many motorhomes are taller than 2.8 m, and taller vehicles can be charged heavy-vehicle rates on some roads, so ask your supplier how tolls are charged.
  • Parking: most CBD and shopping-centre car parks have a height limit of around 2.1 m, so a campervan or motorhome won’t fit. Stay at a holiday park and take the train or ferry into the city.
  • Getting out of the city: pick up mid-morning to avoid peak-hour traffic. The Bankstown and Caringbah depots are well placed for the M5 and M1 heading south, and for the M4 to the Blue Mountains.
  • Overnight stops: councils fine people for sleeping in vans on residential streets, and there are almost no free camps in the city. Book a holiday park or campground. See where you can park a campervan overnight.
  • Overseas licences: you can drive in NSW on a current overseas licence. If it isn’t in English, carry an International Driving Permit or an official English translation.

Where to stay in a campervan near Sydney

  • Lane Cove River Tourist Park (Macquarie Park): inside a national park, 30 minutes from the CBD by train.
  • Sydney Lakeside Holiday Park (Narrabeen): on the Northern Beaches, close to the surf.
  • Bonnie Vale campground (Royal National Park, Bundeena): a national park campground that needs to be booked ahead. You can take the ferry to Cronulla.
  • Blue Mountains, Central Coast and South Coast: holiday parks in Katoomba, Blackheath, Gosford and Kiama make good first or last nights outside the city.

Road trips from Sydney by campervan

5 days: Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley

Sydney → Blue Mountains (Katoomba, the Three Sisters and Blackheath lookouts, 2 nights) → Bells Line of Road → Hunter Valley wineries (2 nights) → back to Sydney on the M1. That’s about 550 km. Big motorhomes should check the vehicle-size limits on the narrow road to Jenolan Caves.

7 days: South Coast and Jervis Bay

Sydney → Royal National Park → Grand Pacific Drive and Sea Cliff Bridge → Kiama → Jervis Bay (2 nights) → Batemans Bay → back via the Southern Highlands. That’s about 900 km. It can also start a one-way trip to Melbourne.

10 days: Sydney to Brisbane via Byron Bay

Sydney → Port Stephens → Port Macquarie → Coffs Harbour → Yamba → Byron Bay (2 nights) → Gold Coast → Brisbane. That’s about 1,000 km. Return the van in Brisbane and fly home.

Best time to hire a campervan in Sydney

Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) have mild weather, fewer crowds and lower prices than summer. Summer is great for beaches, but late December and January are the priciest and busiest time. Winter (June to August) is the cheapest time to hire, and it’s a good season for heading north up the coast towards Queensland.
